Salman Agha Penalized for Equipment Abuse Following Controversial Run-Out

Pakistan’s Salman Agha has been officially reprimanded and given a demerit point after a heated reaction to his dismissal during the second ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur on Friday. The incident, which saw Agha vent his frustration by hurling his gloves and helmet to the ground, was deemed a breach of the ICC’s code of conduct.

Details of the Incident

The flashpoint occurred in the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings. Agha, who had compiled a well-made 64 off 62 balls, was backing up at the non-striker’s end when Mohammad Rizwan struck a drive straight back to bowler Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Miraz managed to block the ball with his foot. As Agha, still outside his crease, moved to pick up the ball-apparently to return it to the bowler-Miraz seized the opportunity, collected the ball, and broke the stumps with a swift underarm throw, catching Agha short of his ground in an unusual run-out.

ICC Code of Conduct Breach

Agha’s emotional response to the dismissal led to a violation of Article 2.2 of the ICC’s code, which prohibits the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, or ground fixtures during an international match. Match referee Neeyamur Rashid Rahul handed Agha a Level 1 sanction, resulting in an official reprimand and a demerit point. Level 1 offences can also incur a fine of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, though the statement did not specify further penalties.

Agha’s Response and Call for Sportsmanship

Following the match, Agha addressed the incident at a press conference. While visibly disappointed, he emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, stating he would have acted differently had he been in Mehidy’s position. Agha accepted responsibility for his actions and agreed to the sanction without contest.

Looking Ahead

This incident serves as a reminder of the high emotions that can surface in closely contested matches, and the importance the ICC places on maintaining discipline and respect for the spirit of the game.
