PCB Imposes Record PKR 20 Million Fine on Naseem Shah Over Maryam Nawaz Tweet

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has been handed what is believed to be the largest financial penalty in the nation’s cricket history, following a contentious social media post concerning Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took swift and decisive action after a tweet from Naseem’s official account, perceived as critical of Nawaz, was posted and then quickly deleted.

The Controversial Tweet and Immediate Aftermath

The incident unfolded just days before the opening match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where Naseem, recently signed by the new franchise Rawalpindiz, appeared to question the special treatment given to Maryam Nawaz at the Gaddafi Stadium. In a now-deleted tweet, his account remarked, “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?” Shortly after, the post was replaced with a statement claiming Naseem’s account had been hacked and had since been recovered.

PCB’s Disciplinary Response

The PCB reacted by issuing a show-cause notice to Naseem and convened a disciplinary hearing with a three-member committee. During the proceedings, the fast bowler offered an unconditional apology and dismissed his social media manager, who was subsequently blacklisted from working with any PCB-affiliated players.

Despite these actions, the PCB determined that Naseem had breached multiple clauses of his central contract, emphasizing their commitment to “upholding professional standards, contractual obligations, and the integrity of the game.” The resulting fine-PKR 20 million (approximately USD 72,000)-sets a new precedent for disciplinary measures within Pakistan cricket.

Political Expression in Pakistani Cricket

This incident reflects the PCB’s increasingly firm stance against political expression by players. Last year, allrounder Aamer Jamal was fined over PKR 1 million (about USD 4,000) for displaying support for former Prime Minister and Pakistan captain Imran Khan during a Test series against England. Jamal had written “804”-Imran Khan’s prisoner number-on his hat, resulting in disciplinary action.

The fine levied on Naseem Shah is over sixteen times greater than Jamal’s, equating to roughly eight months of Naseem’s central contract salary, where he is currently in the ‘C’ category.

Naseem Shah’s Standing in the PSL

Naseem remains a high-profile figure in the PSL, having been the most expensive player in this year’s auction. Rawalpindiz secured his services for PKR 86.50 million (about USD 310,000), further underlining his value and prominence in the league.

Conclusion

The PCB’s record fine against Naseem Shah underscores the board’s zero-tolerance approach to political comments from contracted players, reinforcing both the responsibilities attached to representing the national team and the importance of maintaining professional conduct, both on and off the field.
