Sydney Thunder Bolster BBL Squad with Hasnain’s Return and Garton’s Arrival

Sydney Thunder have reinforced their squad for the remainder of the Big Bash League season with the return of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain. This marks Hasnain’s first appearance in the BBL since his action was reported during the competition, leading to a temporary ban. He rejoins the club as an overseas replacement, alongside English all-rounder George Garton, following the departures of Lockie Ferguson and Sherfane Rutherford to the ILT20.

Hasnain Cleared for Action After Bowling Review

Hasnain previously represented Thunder in the 2021-22 BBL season before being sidelined due to concerns over his bowling action. After undergoing biomechanical assessments, he was cleared to return in 2022, with tests confirming his elbow extension was now within legal limits-reduced from 17-24 degrees to a compliant 12-13 degrees. Since then, Hasnain has featured in Pakistan’s squad during their tour of Australia, contributing to their ODI series win, and has recently competed in South Africa.

Thunder Management on New Signings

Trent Copeland, Sydney Thunder’s general manager, highlighted the strategic approach behind the new signings: “When it came to replacing someone of Lockie Ferguson’s caliber, we sought an X-factor player-someone who can change the course of a game. Hasnain’s raw pace, ability to clock 150 kph, and proven match-winning spells made him an obvious choice. At just 24, he brings energy, wicket-taking prowess, and a significant boost as we approach the finals.”

On George Garton’s inclusion, Copeland added, “With players like Daniel Sams and Sherfane Rutherford leaving, we needed someone who provides balance and versatility. George Garton’s experience across different conditions, left-arm seam, and his batting capabilities add a new dimension to our team. At 27, he brings both experience and adaptability, qualities we value highly for upcoming matches in Hobart and Sydney.”

Current Season Challenges and Team Resilience

Despite a challenging season marked by injuries-including the severe collision in Perth between Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams-Thunder remain second on the table. Bancroft has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament, while Sams is observing a 12-day concussion protocol.

Captain David Warner’s Outlook

Reflecting on the squad’s position, Thunder captain David Warner said, “We’re in a strong spot, sitting second on the ladder. Despite injuries, an abandoned match, and some tight finishes, the team has shown great resilience. The focus now is on building momentum and finishing the season strongly as we head into the finals.”

Looking Ahead

With Hasnain’s express pace and Garton’s all-round abilities, Sydney Thunder have significantly strengthened their lineup for the crucial stages of the BBL. Fans will be eager to see how these high-impact additions influence Thunder’s push for the championship.
